Intro: Part 1
Beneath The Floorboards
Not everything you inherited was wisdom. Some of it was silence, some of it was shame, some of it was survival wrapped in scripture, in secrets, in smiles that didn't reach the eyes. Let's be clear. You were never asking for perfection. You were asking for presence, for protection, for someone to say, "This ends with me." But instead, you got stories that weren't yours, and now you're bleeding from wounds you didn't cause. This is beneath the floorboards, a space for the ones who saw too much, felt too deep, and stayed too quiet.
The ones who kept the peace but lost themselves in the process. This is where we remember what the silence tried to steal. Let's go beneath. You were the one who noticed it all. The slammed cabinets, the silence louder than shouting, the shift in the room that nobody named. You didn't have language yet, but your body did.
It flinched. It froze. It scanned the energy before you ever spoke your first sentence. And when you finally did speak, they told you you were wrong, too dramatic, too sensitive. So you learned the truth was dangerous and kept silent just to keep the family intact. You disappeared into the roles they cast you in.
Maybe you were the strong one, the helper, the fixer. Maybe the scapegoat always blamed, never believed. Or the ghost in the corner, invisible, quiet, still there. Each role was survival, a script to stay safe in a story you didn't write. Let's take a moment to check in. Place a hand over your chest or wherever you feel tight.
Inhale slowly through your nose. Two. Three. Four. Hold for two. Exhale gently.
Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Feel your body as it is, not as it should be.
You are here. You are safe enough to stay. And now. You brick run your needs, you sabotage the love you crave. You chose chaos because it feels like home. Not because you're broken, but because you're loyal to a role that kept you alive.
And later, it carried on. You became the superhero to everyone else, stoic, reliable. So put together, no one ever asked if you were okay. You kept the facade while crashing inside. Or you wore the villain mask, the one they call rebellious, dramatic. That coolness, that distance, that was armor.
You craved to be seen, but feared the cost. Maybe you were that brilliant one, bright, deep, creative. But the light you carried was too much for the room you were raised in. So you dimmed it, not because it faded, but because it hurt too much to shine alone. Let's start here. What role did you play?
What did it cost you? And what would it mean to finally put down the script? Here's a section in the upcoming Beneath the Floor board's workbook called Adult Echoes. It's designed for moments like this when you start to recognize the roles you were cast in and what they've cost you. You don't have to fix it all, you just have to see it clearly. I'm going to give you a small piece of that.
I want you to grab a piece of paper and a pen. And I want you to write this sentence. I had to be blank in order to feel safe. I had to be blank in order to feel safe. Then I want you to go back and rewrite the second sentence. I am allowed to be blank and still be loved.
I am allowed to be blank and still be loved. Here's an affirmation for you. I was never the role they cast me in. I was the truth they couldn't hold. I was never the role they cast me in. I was the truth they couldn't hold.
